Conditional (2019)

 

Conditional was commissed by Wolftone (Ben Roidl-Ward, bassoon and William Overcash, *prepared* violin), with funding provided by the Luminarts Cultural Foundation. The piece was premiered at Constellation (Chicago, IL) in January 2020, followed by performances at Public Space One (Iowa City, IA) and Valparaiso University (Valparaiso, IN).

 

This is an improvisatory piece built around the idea of a conditional relationship between the two performers, namely that the bassoonist is not allowed to participate in the piece until they hear the violinist perform a certain technique (a timbral "common ground") for a certain amount of time.

 

Three interpretations were performed in a recording session on January 7, 2020, facilitated by James Edel (recording engineer). Iowa City, IA.
